Women's Health Q&A

What is women’s health care?

Women’s health care is medical care focused on your unique needs as a female. It’s a broad category because women’s health involves older girls and adult women at every phase of their lives.

This includes:

Reproductive years

The reproductive years cover the time from your first period until the start of menopause.

Menopause transition

The transition into menopause usually starts between ages 45-55, with the total transition lasting around seven years on average.

Postmenopause

Postmenopause covers the rest of your life after completing menopause (one full year with no periods).

What does women’s health care include?

At TopCare Family & Wellness Clinic, women’s health care covers everything a woman needs medically through the different phases of her life. While needs change over time, the general services included in women’s health include:

  • Pap smears (cervical cancer screening)
  • Women’s wellness exams
  • Birth control
  • Breast health monitoring and exams
  • Osteoporosis screening
  • Help with menopause symptoms
  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD) screening and testing (lab work in the office)
  • Sexual health support
  • Help with abnormal periods
  • Help with fertility problems
  • Diagnosis and treatment of conditions like uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, and endometriosis

At TopCare Family & Wellness Clinic, the team of caring women’s health specialists also serve as your primary care providers. That means they monitor your general health, recommend age-appropriate screenings, offer immunizations, provide chronic disease management, and treat any acute problems that may come up.

How often do I need women’s health care?

Most women need well-woman exams once a year. This visit usually includes a pelvic exam, breast exam, Pap smear, and other screenings and tests based on your age and needs.

For example, breast health screenings generally start at 35, and osteoporosis screenings start at 65, although the specific age to start depends on your risk factors.

If you combine your women’s wellness exam with your annual primary care physical, you may have additional tests.

If you develop new problems, like heavy periods, difficulty getting pregnant, birth control failure, or anything else, schedule an additional visit as soon as possible. The empathetic team understands women’s health problems and is here to support you.
